GOALS

1

TO PROMOTE GENDER EQUALITY THROUGHOUT THE WORLD OF SAILING

2

TO BUILD A LEGACY TO INSPIRE THE FUTURE OF WOMEN IN THIS SPORT

3

TO DEVELOP NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR TECHNICAL AND PROFESSIONAL GROWTH

STATUS QUO

Sailing has come a long way over recent years. In 2020, World Sailing was the first Olympic sport to sign the UN Women Sport for Generation Equality Declaration, aimed at eliminating gender-based discrimination throughout the sport. In view of this, the Olympic Agenda 2020 is paving the way towards a 50% female participation at the Olympic Games while also developing further opportunities for mixed-gender team events.

And yet, there remains a serious underlying problem at the heart of our sport. Persisting instances of unequal opportunities and compensation still reflect a clear bias against female sailors. With a lack of opportunities, female sailors are still missing out on the technical and professional experience necessary to develop their careers. At Equal Sailing we commend and support all steps forward. However, we also believe that there is still a long way to go before sailing can become a truly equal playing field.

IT’S TIME TO MAKE CHANGE HAPPEN.

OPPORTUNITIES

1

SAILING IS ONE OF THE VERY FEW SPORTS WHERE MEN AND WOMEN CAN COMPETE ON A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD

2

GREATER TECHNICAL SKILLS GAINED FROM TRAINING AND EVENTS CAN HELP BALANCE THE DISPARITY BETWEEN MALE AND FEMALE SAILORS

3

THE SAME COMMITMENT TO DEVELOPING SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE ALSO HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BRIDGE THE GENDER PAY GAP
